INSOMNIA
01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.

CITY AT NIGHT
1) WORKING.
You're still caught up at the office or wherever it is you're holed up. It's getting late, but there's work to be done.
2) RELAXING.
You're warm and comfortable someplace indoors, whether it's in a cozy nook of a café or maybe just in your own apartment. There's no other place you really need to be, is there?
3) MEET-UP/DATE.
Is there someone you're seeing for dinner? A date? Maybe you're going bar-hopping together with some friends, or your attendance is expected at some special event. Alternatively, there's someone you're meeting with to make a deal of some kind, whether it's perfectly legitimate or something that might invite trouble with local enforcement.
4) OUT FOR A WALK.
Sometimes, it's nice to get out for some fresh air—or, well, as fresh as it gets with all the air pollution around you. The park's not too far away; it might be nice and quiet at this hour, if you don't run into any...
5) TROUBLE.
It's getting late and it's dark outside, but someone has been tailing you for a while. Walking faster only makes them speed up; they're doggedly persistent. What to do now? Is there a busy street you can turn on to for help? Or maybe it's time to confront your pursuer... On the flip side, you're the one tracking someone. For what reason? Well, only you would know, right?
6) OTHER.

A) STREETS/ALLEYS.
Are you visiting a busy district teeming with people? Or are you out on a quieter street? It can be dark out there, especially if you turn onto a smaller one without many streetlamps. Watch your step. Some of the alleyways might make good shortcuts if you're trying to get somewhere fast, but there's also trouble to be found sometimes. Don't get cornered anywhere, and especially don't get too curious if you see something suspicious in one of the dumpsters...
B) IN TRANSIT.
You're between locations right now, just trying to get on with your evening. You have some options, like public transportation: the bus, the train, the subway. Alternatively, you're a fancier kind of person: you've got your own car that you're driving, or better yet, you have a chauffeur and a private car. Or, you know, you're just taking a taxi or using a ride-share app. There are also transitional spaces like parking lots or garages.
C) DINING.
Some cities are melting pots of different cultures; you're bound to find countless spots at which to eat. There are small cafés if you want a quick bite, or fancier restaurants where you can wine and dine. You could support a small family business by dropping by at a local hole in the wall—sometimes the most authentic spots with the best food are nondescript locations. Or if you're really trying to impress, go for some famous Michelin three-star.
D) NIGHT LIFE.
Bars, clubs, lounges—all of it's fair game. Remember to drink responsibly—or don't, if you're looking to really forget about your troubles for a while. Just know that you'll only have yourself to blame for that raging hangover in the morning.
E) CORPORATE BUILDING.
In a larger city, major corporations might be headquartered in the glittering skyscrapers that line the most expensive districts. There are all kinds of businesses—banks, law firms, finance companies, tech groups, to state just a few. Some places might keep their lights on pretty late at night for the white-collar workers burning the midnight oil; others, perhaps not. Do you fit somewhere in this equation? Or if you're here for something more exciting, there's always corporate espionage...
F) SHOPS.
A lot of shops could be closed by now, but maybe it's that final hour before that mall or outlet you wanted to visit locks their doors for the evening. Time for some last-second shopping! Snatch up that deal before it's gone, or be sure to buy a gift for your date before it's too late!
G) HOME.
You're at home, wherever that is—an apartment, a condo, a house somewhere, or maybe something more extravagant. Real estate can get expensive in the city, especially in popular locations. Do you have a tiny apartment that covers all your basic needs? Or something much nicer, like the type of penthouse people usually only see in movies, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows?
H) CITY SQUARE.
Some city squares are hubs of activity, filled with street performers, pop-up stores, or food stalls. There's a lot you could do, especially when it's nighttime and the little lights strung around the place look so pretty.
I) ABANDONED SPACE.
Every city has its fair share of abandoned warehouses or other buildings that are slated for demolition. Sometimes they attract certain types of crowds that would make your average person think twice before confronting. A lot of places are off-limits, but every so often, the no-trespassing sign is more of a suggestion than a real threat, right?

[Don't want to stain the couch or the nice rugs, after all. So she just follows Aerith around, trying not to let the amused giggles escape her at how cute the display of this is. It's so silly, this whole thing, but she's having some fun with it.]

She leads Tifa around her living room with this cup of coffee. Looking over her shoulder to her companion, however, she pauses.]

[It's said quietly, a shy murmur as she tucks a strand of loose hair behind her ear and moves the conversation right along.]
The difference is that at the bar, there are bottles and drinks, trays and glasses for you to carry. Food, too. Unless Elmyra has all that here, I doubt we'll manage the same effect.

With an expert carefulness, which is less expert and more Aerith awkwardly turning where she stands, she keeps her cup well-balanced atop the flat of her palm.]

[And really, she's not sure she wants to explain later on why there's potentially a lot of broken dishes. Those cost money and it's not as if they're exactly well off.]

[Who better to ask than someone who will no doubt agree but will also be grumpy about the whole thing at the same time? The perfect person to test out Aerith's people skills on. Not that Aerith has anything to prove in that department—she has boundless charisma.]

[Aerith’s expression brightens and for just a moment, she indulges in a sip from the cup. It’s probably Tifa’s coffee, honestly, but she probably won’t mind sharing just a little of it.]
That’s a really good idea. I’m sure he’ll just love it. Even if he doesn’t, we will. Maybe we should cover him in something protective. Like a tablecloth? I’m almost guaranteed to spill something on him. He tolerates me most of the time, but he might not tolerate that.

[The only person her puppy eyes seem to work on is Cloud, and she'll absolutely take advantage of that. The image that Aerith's idea conjures up does make her giggle to herself, though.]

[Aerith knows she certainly wouldn’t be able to. Tifa’s just too cute to handle, honestly. She brings up a good question, however. Cloud in a tablecloth does not necessarily seem like a happy Cloud. Not that Aerith would say she’s familiar with any kind of ‘happy’ Cloud.
Around her, he seems to be largely perplexed by her demeanour. Perhaps a little curious.

If he doesn’t put up with it, he’d just have to be prepared to get covered in food. Or drinks. Possibly both. Probably both. We might never hear the end of it if that happens. You might be able to flirt your way out of that one too, though.

[He would do just about anything for a price, if it involved gil. Though, she's not sure if she could flirt her way through that one. It'll probably have to be a payout—a deposit for his time, and then free drinks on top of that, but the thought still makes her giggle.]

[But Tifa reaches out to gingerly take the cup from Aerith's hands so that she can hold it instead. The scent of it is drawing her back in and she takes a sip.]

[Aerith releases a soft laugh. It’s exactly what he told her when she’s asked him to help her with various things. It’s always about a ‘price’ with him. But she guesses she can understand it. Mercenaries have to make a living too, after all. And it doesn’t seem like working for Avalanche is the most lucrative.
Not… that most people in the slums are making much of a living.
She gives up Tifa’s coffee without a second thought and her expression softens, faced with a woman she’d consider her closest friend, all things considered.]
Hm… I think I can. But I think if I have you around, Tifa, I can do just about anything. At least, that’s how it feels. It was easier to say that before, but maybe I haven’t always felt the same way.

There's something so bittersweet about this moment that Tifa has to skate her eyes away. She spins, slightly, to hide the fact that there's an even wider smile blossoming over her lips. It's not often that anyone says something like that to her, and hearing it from one of the people she's so quickly grown to care about most...
It makes her heart feel so full that she fears it might burst.]

[Cloud had said so, so she's going to go with that, because it's the easiest thing she can cling onto right now, to tether herself before she floats away inside her own rushing thoughts.]

It's not knowing. It's not patronising. It simply is, as so many things about Aerith simply are. How could anyone not be curious over those that they keep so close? Seems a crime to act in any other way.]
You're not just a good teacher, you know.
[Aerith can't help sidling right up to her, content to settle a chin to Tifa's shoulder, though it takes some effort on her part to even make that happen.]
A good person. A good caretaker. A good friend. I'm not sure I'd know what I'd be doing without you. It's not like I wasn't fine with just Mom and me.
[Aerith knows she would have made due. Just as she has for years now. She presses on, despite the things she's experienced, despite who and what she is. After all, it's not as though she can change the past or change things so directly about herself. It's not as though her past can be simplified down to a personality trait. Things are the way they are because that is how it has to be.]
Things are better with you, though. I think I could be happy just being in the same room as you, actually. I'm not very hard to please.

And it's not often that Tifa hears all of those things. She does enjoy being a caretaker, a friend, someone who looks after the people she cares dearly for, but past that, it all just comes to her so easily that she never expects a thank you or a good job from anyone.
... But it is very heart-warming to be able to hear it.]

[She could echo all the very same things back to Aerith, but for Tifa, it's just easier this way.]
I guess it's just different... Haven't really made many new friends since the gang. [Her laugh comes easily, but it's a touch bittersweet.] They're all still sort of tied to the past. I guess... for you and Cloud, it's more a... new me, you know?

[Aerith is all smiles, perhaps touched that someone would think so highly of her. In her head, she’s always just.. herself. Easily overlooked. Easily forgotten. She doesn’t stand out. And if she were standing in a crowd of people, she’s almost certain she would just drown in them. There isn’t much about her that’s significant in the broad spectrum of things, she’s sure, and that’s never really bothered her.
Better to be underestimated than to be recognised. Easier to live that way. Easier to make a difference in the lives around her.]
I don’t think you need to be new. I think you just need to be you.
[But… As Aerith eyes her with such a pure look, imploring and patient wrapped in the embrace of something unadulterated, she finds her words and the way she wants to more properly present them.]
Sometimes we find parts of ourselves that we didn’t know were there by the company we keep. Maybe you’re opening yourself up and making these discoveries. It was probably a part of you all along. Perhaps you didn’t see it before?

I guess... yeah, maybe...
[Aerith, especially, brings out something new in Tifa that she still can't quite put her finger on. It's still hard for her, even right now, to talk about these sorts of things, and she can feel the embarrassment already beginning to sink in, but little by little, Aerith is the one who's nudged her just past those limits. Nudged her into territory she's always been a little too scared to go, but it feels less daunting with her around to be there with her when she does.
She slumps down on the couch then, careful not to spill her coffee, and stretches her legs out, suddenly feeling a bit shy again.]
What about you? [And there she goes, steering it away from herself again.] Since we've never had a sleepover before... what's something new that you've always wanted to try?

At the question, she tilts her head from side to side, clearly giving it a lot of thought.]
Hmmm. Ride on an airship? Always wanted to go on one of those. Travelling outside of Midgar would be pretty cool. Probably all kinds of flowers outside. [Not that she could do any such thing with Elmyra and things as they were.] I'd say dye my hair, but that might be a little too adventurous for me. Nothing too extravagant, I think.

[That's the one that surprises Tifa the most, and while her eyes do go wide with it, she seems to bubble up with curiosity and amusement, too. It's not something she ever considered doing for herself, mainly because she thinks black suits her and there isn't much that would work well with the colour anyway, but for Aerith...]
