01 โข FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 โข HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 โข PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 โข SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 โข DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 โข PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?

CITY AT NIGHT
1) WORKING.
You're still caught up at the office or wherever it is you're holed up. It's getting late, but there's work to be done.

You're warm and comfortable someplace indoors, whether it's in a cozy nook of a cafรฉ or maybe just in your own apartment. There's no other place you really need to be, is there?
3) MEET-UP/DATE.
Is there someone you're seeing for dinner? A date? Maybe you're going bar-hopping together with some friends, or your attendance is expected at some special event. Alternatively, there's someone you're meeting with to make a deal of some kind, whether it's perfectly legitimate or something that might invite trouble with local enforcement.
4) OUT FOR A WALK.
Sometimes, it's nice to get out for some fresh airโor, well, as fresh as it gets with all the air pollution around you. The park's not too far away; it might be nice and quiet at this hour, if you don't run into any...
5) TROUBLE.
It's getting late and it's dark outside, but someone has been tailing you for a while. Walking faster only makes them speed up; they're doggedly persistent. What to do now? Is there a busy street you can turn on to for help? Or maybe it's time to confront your pursuer... On the flip side, you're the one tracking someone. For what reason? Well, only you would know, right?

A) STREETS/ALLEYS.
Are you visiting a busy district teeming with people? Or are you out on a quieter street? It can be dark out there, especially if you turn onto a smaller one without many streetlamps. Watch your step. Some of the alleyways might make good shortcuts if you're trying to get somewhere fast, but there's also trouble to be found sometimes. Don't get cornered anywhere, and especially don't get too curious if you see something suspicious in one of the dumpsters...
B) IN TRANSIT.
You're between locations right now, just trying to get on with your evening. You have some options, like public transportation: the bus, the train, the subway. Alternatively, you're a fancier kind of person: you've got your own car that you're driving, or better yet, you have a chauffeur and a private car. Or, you know, you're just taking a taxi or using a ride-share app. There are also transitional spaces like parking lots or garages.
C) DINING.
Some cities are melting pots of different cultures; you're bound to find countless spots at which to eat. There are small cafรฉs if you want a quick bite, or fancier restaurants where you can wine and dine. You could support a small family business by dropping by at a local hole in the wallโsometimes the most authentic spots with the best food are nondescript locations. Or if you're really trying to impress, go for some famous Michelin three-star.
D) NIGHT LIFE.
Bars, clubs, loungesโall of it's fair game. Remember to drink responsiblyโor don't, if you're looking to really forget about your troubles for a while. Just know that you'll only have yourself to blame for that raging hangover in the morning.
E) CORPORATE BUILDING.
In a larger city, major corporations might be headquartered in the glittering skyscrapers that line the most expensive districts. There are all kinds of businessesโbanks, law firms, finance companies, tech groups, to state just a few. Some places might keep their lights on pretty late at night for the white-collar workers burning the midnight oil; others, perhaps not. Do you fit somewhere in this equation? Or if you're here for something more exciting, there's always corporate espionage...
F) SHOPS.
A lot of shops could be closed by now, but maybe it's that final hour before that mall or outlet you wanted to visit locks their doors for the evening. Time for some last-second shopping! Snatch up that deal before it's gone, or be sure to buy a gift for your date before it's too late!
G) HOME.
You're at home, wherever that isโan apartment, a condo, a house somewhere, or maybe something more extravagant. Real estate can get expensive in the city, especially in popular locations. Do you have a tiny apartment that covers all your basic needs? Or something much nicer, like the type of penthouse people usually only see in movies, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows?
H) CITY SQUARE.
Some city squares are hubs of activity, filled with street performers, pop-up stores, or food stalls. There's a lot you could do, especially when it's nighttime and the little lights strung around the place look so pretty.
I) ABANDONED SPACE.
Every city has its fair share of abandoned warehouses or other buildings that are slated for demolition. Sometimes they attract certain types of crowds that would make your average person think twice before confronting. A lot of places are off-limits, but every so often, the no-trespassing sign is more of a suggestion than a real threat, right?
J) OTHER.

she nods once in response, shifting her weight as she prepares to get a running start into her jumps. ]
I'll be back for you, [ she promises, an unspoken "don't die or get captured" hanging between them as she pushes off into a sprint. the grunts hesitate a split second too long in targeting her, clearly unprepared for someone to come running at them. the moment afforded her is enough and she leans forward just before she reaches them, sending herself into a cartwheel. pushing off the cement with her hands, she aims her feet for the shoulders of one of those grunts, using his height to catapult herself up to the top. in the process, she takes that grunt out of the fight, the sound of him collapsing to the ground behind her the last she hears from them.
her lips curl upwards just slightly as she glances down at tifa, another firm nod the only response she gives before she takes off towards the landing. at least now tifa has one less adversary to deal with.
in the meantime, lightning hurries off to the airships she can see. a whole group of people is gathering, some obviously shinra and some more like barret and tifa, the former of whom catches lightning's eye immediately. ]
Where's Tifa?! [ he yells as she approaches. ]
Out of that room, [ is all lightning is comfortable saying with shinra grunts running around. ] We need an airship. [ a pause and then she adds on, her eyebrows quirked with confusion, ] Is that a stuffed cat?
It's a long story, [ the stuffed cat (?) responds, glancing at barret. ] She a friend of yours?
She helped me get free. [ barret huffs out a breath of frustration, moving forward to cock his gun-arm at the shinra lackeys approaching. none of them have time for any discussions, but they're also at a bit of a dead end. if they can't get an airship up and running fast, they're all dead and lightning's efforts will have been for nothing.
boy, she hates that feeling. ]
How do we get one of these things running? [ she asks, nodding her head at the closest airship. ]
Well, that's the thing, [ the talking stuffed cat โ she's never going to get used to that, even with moogles around her world โ says. barret looks ready to strangle it, a sight that makes lightning's mouth curve with amusement. the group dynamic is familiar, a dance she knows well. this she can handle. ] We don't.
Whatโ? [ lightning starts, just as barret begins swearing and something rumbles in the background.
a rush of air cuts everything off next, a downdraft that buys them precious seconds of time as several shinra grunts go flying. the closest airship to the small group of misfits rumbles to life, propellers spinning as it lifts just ever so slightly off the ground, obviously in preparation to take off. it's almost too good to be true, in lightning's opinion, but if her gut instinct is anything to go by โ ]
Everybody on! [ the cat yells, motioning the group to climb the ladder over the side. ] We're going to rescue Tifa!
[ lightning doesn't need to be told twice. she leaps up to the rope ladder and climbs in a few swift motions. the rest of the group heads up just after her and soon enough they're on their way. the cat tells them a man named "cid" is piloting from the inside as they swing around and lightning heads inside to the cockpit to help guide them around to the cannon, where tifa should still be, praying to whatever will listen that they're not too late to save her. ]

It's an odd thing to place so much trust into this stranger she's just met, but Tifa likes to think she's good at reading people. Her gut tells her that Lightning wouldn't turn tail and run, if their very first minutes together were any indication of that, and that she'll be back as promised. It's just a matter of keeping Scarlet's attention long enough for her to do that. It isn't hardโseems the Shinra head is eager to settle a score, too.
"The execution may have been unsuccessful," she begins without prompting, and Tifa folds her hands behind her back innocently, "but your death by falling and crashing into the water below might still be pretty exciting." She steps towards Tifa and, without warning, raises a hand and slaps it across her cheek. "Stuck up to the end!"
Her own hand immediately shoots up to the already-stinging cheek and she reels back in surprise. Tifa can feel all of her hatred, anger, rage coming to a boil as she stares, bewildered, at Scarlet. For Shinra and Sephiroth, for her, for all of them...]
Quit slapping me! [She winds up a hand.] You old bitch!!!
[And propels it forward to slap her square in the face as hard as she can.
"How could you!?"
And then again.]
What!?
[And again.]
Pay back!
[Scarlet tries to raise her hand, but Tifa slaps again.]
Stop it!
[The last one, she balls up her hand into a first and nails her in the jaw and sends Scarlet tumbling sideways onto the pipe, that punch powered by each bit of anger she feels in every fibre of her being. She lets the woman get back up on her feet, and Tifa considers knocking her down again just for good measure, but she calls for more of her grunts to come for her.
"Take her away." With a smug smile, she turns to Tifa, her fingers curling near her bruised lips. "Now it's time to pay up. Calm down or I'll drop you. Kya, ha, ha, ha!!!"
If Tifa could roll her eyes any more violently than she already is, then she would. Her fists come up again, prepared to fight off her and her two lackies... when a familiar voice booms out from somewhere behind her.
"Run...! Run to the end of the cannon!!!"
Barret? But Tifa doesn't wait to find out. She spins around on her heel and sprints for the end of the cannon, and towards the sound of the whirring propellers as the airship rises in front of herโ]

once she's sure the pilot knows exactly where to aim, lightning makes her way back outside. barret calls out to tifa, unfurling a rope ladder as they approach from below. as the airship begins lifting into sight, lightning climbs down the ladder. curling both legs around the rope rungs and securing them so she won't easily be dislodged, she hangs upside down at the end of the ladder, watching and ready. ]
Tifa! Jump!
[ as soon as she spies tifa on the edge of the cannon, lightning reaches out with both arms, stretching with every fiber of her being so that she can catch tifa once the other woman pushes off from the cannon. tifa probably could reach the ladder on her own at this angle, but lightning is taking no chances. if they want to get to the end of all of this, and lightning wants to save this world and figure out why she's here, then tifa needs to survive.
and honestly, lightning likes her already. that has to count for something.
the goal now is to grab tifa when she jumps and help her swing up onto the ladder so she can get into the airship. lightning isn't leaving her perch until then, no matter how many passes the airship has to make. she's not giving up. ]

Shots are being fired from behind her as she makes the jump, seeing Lightning waiting there for her. She probably could have made it, yes, but that little bit of leeway helps, especially as she's forced to dodge the few bullets that whizz past her feet. She very nearly misses because of it, and were it not for that wiggle room, she would have risked falling down into the water, but Tifa makes it. Her fingers grip tight around Lightning's wrist as soon as she grabs hold, and the airship rises and rises to carry them away, all while Barret is yelling and cheering over the railings of the deck above.
With a tired and relieved sigh, Tifa hangs there and takes a moment to just be glad she made it out of there, and as her other hand takes hold of the rope, she smiles up at Lightning.]

barret's cheering from the top pulls her out of her thoughts and as tifa grips the rope ladder, lightning finally lets go, curling herself so she can disentangle her legs and climb up first. once at the top, she hops the railing and steps aside to let tifa climb up as well and then moves back inside the airship.
she knows she owes them explanations, but figuring out how to even start answering the unspoken questions has her mind reeling a little bit. so rather than sit around in the outside, she makes her way back to the cockpit to wait. the reunions from the group, obviously friends from the look of it, are more important than whatever she can offer, so she settles into a corner by herself in the cockpit, well within sight of other people so no one gets any ideas about her doing anything. here she waits for the rest to join them, only moving to catch tifa's attention when she spots her. ]
Guess I owe you some answers.
[ that goes for the rest of the group, too, she supposes, but tifa was the one she'd seemingly randomly rescued, so she'll start there. ]

[Barret chuckles. "Can't keep me down for long. I've got Cait Sith, Cid, and Yuffie to thank for that." His brown eyes land on Lightning. "Her, too."
Tifa's smile widens slightly but there's a bit of a falter to it, and her hands go to her hips after she brushes herself off.]
Guess you do. But those can wait. Let's get inside first...
[Maybe sit down for a moment and make sure that everyone is okay. Surely there will be plenty of questions and some time to answer them.
She leads the way through the doors into the airship and tells Barret to go ahead so that she can talk to Lightning first. As soon as he's gone, there's a visible shift in her. Her smile is gone, replaced with a sad look to her eyes, all of that confidence shaken and shrunk, making her appear twice as small.]

her eyes take in the walls around them, gaze sliding across the marks and colors without really seeing any of it. her mind wanders for a moment back to another place and a person she fought so hard to protect. she'd failed serah, couldn't prevent her sister from experiencing the horrors of being a l'cie. she'd even failed fang and vanille in a way, though theirs had been their choice at least.
tifa speaks again and lightning's attention slides back to her. ]
Don't mention it. I was in the right place at the right time.
[ another small pause follows as she returns her gaze to the walls in front of them. her eyes narrow a bit, like she's not really seeing anything in front of her, mind on somewhere else entirely. ]
I wish I could say I know why I'm here, but... I don't. [ it's so very telling for her to admit that she has no idea why she's here, both in that lightning herself isn't in control and for a segue into those explanations she owes. subconsciously, her hand lifts to drift fingers over the spot where her l'cie brand used to be, almost as though she could still feel it. ] Like I said, my name is Lightning and I'm not from around here. I was trying to find a way home when I saw you and Barret on your way to an execution. I've seen more than enough of those to know what was going on.
[ the purge comes to mind immediately, the massacre on board the palamecia on its heels. turning back to face tifa, she lets her hand fall back to her side. ]
ShinRa's desperate for control, but they're after the wrong thing. If I can help your people, I will. And maybe I'll find my own answers along the way.

It's only then that she'll have any words to say, mostly because if any of the others found out about this, they'd likely vote to leave her behind somewhere as soon as they found out that she was from another world. Her own stomach does a dreadful turn, but for a whole other reason. She's visibly deflated by now, and she folds her arms across herself and moves her eyes from the floor to meet Lightning's at last.]

[ it's a small joke, as evidenced by the slight upturn to her lips, but still genuine. she wants to be useful to them for as long as she's here. shinra put a bad taste in her mouth and even though she doesn't know quite what's going on here, she knows she's here to help. and maybe by helping these people, she can find a way to help her own. ]
Besides... [ she pauses long enough to lift her chin just slightly, a sign that she really means what she's about to say. ] I'm glad you made it out okay.
[ another pause and then she asks carefully, ] Do you know what you'll be doing next?
[ she's missing a huge chunk of the bigger picture and wants to learn all she can, but she may as well start small. learn what the next steps are and then why and then move onto what they're really after. ]

Tifa's expression twists into a frown, and for a moment, she feels her chest constrict like a sob is about to form, but she swallows it down. She should be thinking about the bigger things right now, but every time she does, her mind just wanders back to him. She feels terrible, especially with Lightning standing here in front of her, but...
There's a long stretch of silence as Tifa tries to think it over, but her mind had been made up a long, long time ago. Long before she was captured. She had made her mind up the moment in the Northern Crater. So, why even pretend she wants to do anything else?]
I... I need to find my friend. I don't know where he is, or what happened to him, but... I can't... I won't do anything else until I know he's okay.
